How do I know which walker is best suited for me?

Your health care provider will best be suited to help you with your decisions as to which walker is best suited for your needs. However, if you are trying to narrow your choices, keep the following things in mind:

  • How tall are you – for example, the RIVA™ handles are adjustable up to a height of 41½” in 1” increments, ideal for those extra tall individuals;
  • How much you weigh – for example, EXCEL™ has a wide span between the handles and a spacious seating area for a comfortable fit;
  • Where you will primarily be using the walker – outdoors, indoors, in rural areas that have many dirt roads – for example, the 4200DX™ is a compact and lightweight walker, ideal for use in and around the home as well as the occasional trip outdoors;
  • If you require any accessories – for example, the INFINITI 500™ has an extra large basket that can accommodate a number of accessories such as an oxygen tank holder.

Please look at each individual walker to determine which best suits your needs.

How do I use my braking system?

Our braking system is designed with ease of use in mind. It features an arthritic ball at the end of the handle. To use the brake, pull up on the handle to slow down and push down to lock (you should feel a “click”).

My brakes do not seem to “lock” properly.

As the tires wear it will become necessary to adjust the brakes.

  • Turn the silver adjustment screw located on brake housing clockwise if you wish to tighten the grip of the brake.
  • Turn the silver adjustment screw counter-clockwise to make the brake easier to apply.
  • The brake MUST always hold the tire in position.

If this does not seem to help, please check to see:

  • that your brake pad is not worn
  • that the tire is not too worn

If either of these occur, please contact your nearest authorized dealer.

What is the difference between “hand brakes” and “auto-stop brakes”?

Our walkers feature one of two braking systems:

  • an “Auto-Stop” braking system where pushing down on the walker will stop movement or;
  • “Push-to-Lock” braking system that includes a brake handle that will either slow down or stop movement on the walker.

The type of walker that is best suited for you depends on your needs. Please contact your home health care provider or nearest authorized dealer to help you with your decision.

How do I fold my walker?

(Riva/4200LX/4200DX/Excel)Our easy-to-use-folding feature is standard on all walkers. To fold the walker, remove the basket and simply pull up on the handle located on the seat. The walker conveniently folds for storage or travel.

On the RIVA™ you can fold the backrest as well. To fold the backrest, pull up on both sides of the backrest at the same time. The elastic cord in the backrest prevents the folded piece from being misplaced.

How do I fold the Infiniti 500?

One of the features of Infiniti is the folding frame lock. This is the red slider on the frame that prevents the walker from folding. To lock the frame, slide the red slider to the left. To fold the frame, remove the basket, slide the red slider to the right, and pull up on the handle.

How do I adjust the height of my walker?

We recommend that an authorized dealer adjust your walker at time of purchase. You may either adjust the handle height, the frame height and/or the backrest height.

RIVA™ EXCEL™ 4200DX™ 4200LX™

To adjust the handle and frame height, unscrew the star handles located on the outside frame of the walker. Lift the handles to the desired height using the pre-set holes and re-screw the star handles to hold the handles in place. Make sure that when adjusting the height, the frame is level.

The RIVA™ backrest is adjustable in height to accommodate a variety of user sizes. An Allen Key may be used to assist you in adjusting your backrest height. To raise the backrest to the desired position, undo the two bolts on each side of the backrest with the Allen Key, raise the backrest and re-tighten the bolts. Make sure that the backrest is level. If the backrest is not level it will be difficult to fold.

INFINITI 500™
To adjust your handle, you must first disconnect the brake mechanism. Put the brake mechanism in the "neutral" position and locate the hole in the push handle above the star handle (a screw should be visible). Using the Allen Key turn the screw counter clockwise (1 turn) to disconnect the brake mechanism. Unscrew the star handle and remove the bolt. Set the handle to the desired height by gently pulling up or down. Once the desired height is attained, insert the bolt and tighten it with the star handle. Re-tighten the screw using the Allen Key.

As the tire wears it will become necessary to adjust the brakes. To adjust the brake, locate the screw on the brake pad above the wheel and using the Allen Key turn the screw clockwise to tighten the brake and counter clockwise to loosen.

How do I clean my walker?

To clean your walker, simply wipe down with a damp cloth.

My handles seem to be loose?

Periodically tighten all the bolts on walker (once a month should be more than enough) to ensure a tight finish.

BATHROOM SAFETY

Why won’t my tub rail fit my bathtub properly?

Our series of bathtub rails are designed to fit most new bathtubs and can extend from 3” to 6” (steel rails can extend up to 6½”). They will not work with old style metal bathtubs with a curved edge finish.

Before installing your safety rail, make sure your tub is dry and dirt free. The safety rail can be mounted at either the front or back end of the tub. It is best to locate the flattest section of the inner and outer bathtub wall as the most secure grip will be achieved. AVOID curves in the bathtub where the safety rail will not properly grip.

Verify that your bathtub rail is firmly in place by applying pressure. If it shifts or appears loose, tighten the adjustment handles. Please refer to your instruction manual for details on adjusting the tub rail. Periodically tighten your clamp (once per month should suffice).

What's the Difference?

INJECTION MOULDED products are extremely durable and require ribs for added support. Because the plastic is injected into the mould at an extremely high pressure, these products are the most symmetrical and most uniform in design. In addition, the ribs produce a virtually unbreakable product.

ROTATIONALLY MOULDED products are created when a detergent-like powder is poured into a mould, put into an extremely hot oven and spun very quickly in varying directions. The centrifical force turns the powder into a liquid that coats the walls of the mould creating an extremely durable, uniform and hygienic product (there are no joints or seams to trap dirt and bacteria).

About Blood Pressure

Blood pressure is the force exerted by blood against the walls of the arteries. Systolic pressure occurs when the heart contracts. Diastolic pressure occurs when the heart relaxes. Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and is typically recorded with the systolic pressure written first, followed by a slash mark and the diastolic pressure. For example, 120mmHg systolic and 80mmHg diastolic would be "120/80".

Following are established standards for assessment of high blood pressure:
Category Systolic (mmHg) Diastolic (mmHg)
Normal <130 <85
High Normal 130-139 85-89
Hypertension Stage 1 (Mild) 140-159 90-99
Hypertension Stage 2 (Moderate) 160-179 100-109
Hypertension Stage 3 (Severe) 180-209 110-119
Hypertension Stage 4 (Very Severe) >=210 >=120

Choosing the Right Blood Pressure Unit

Many factors such as age, weight, time of day, physical activities, diet, certain medication and emotional stress can affect blood pressure. Home monitoring reduces the effects of outside influences and allows for a more relaxed setting to obtain an accurate reading.

There are several options available for home monitoring. It is recommended that a physician help you decide which unit can best meet your needs, however any special conditions that you may have will help you start. For example, a digital monitor is good for those who have difficulty hearing but not appropriate for those with a weak or irregular heartbeat. An auto-inflate unit would be more effective for those who have difficulty squeezing an inflator bulb.

A few important things to remember when taking a blood pressure reading:

  • sit and relax for about 5 to 10 minutes before taking a blood pressure reading
  • rest and position your arm on a table so that the arm will be at heart level (if using a finger model, rest the finger at heart level to ensure that an accurate reading is obtained)
  • be sure to remove any constrictive articles, such as clothing or jewelry that might interfere with the placement of the cuff
  • wait at least 10 to 15 minutes between readings to allow circulation to return to normal
  • take readings at the same time each day to get the best comparison
  • keep track of your readings so that you can take information to your doctor

Alternating Pressure Pumps

Our state-of-the-art alternating pressure pump and pad systems change pressure points on a regular cyclical basis, thereby bringing relief to large capillary areas and permitting more beneficial circulation. Their double-isolated mounting ensures the quietest operation. All connections and controls are convenient and simple to use.

Using Your Alternating Pressure Pump

  1. Place the pump on a flat surface, or suspend pump on end of bed with attached hook.
  2. Place the pad on the top of bed mattress with the connections closest to the unit.
  3. Connect the air hoses to the pump and pad. Hose ends with fittings go on pad.
  4. Check and ensure the air hoses are not kinked or tucked under mattress.
  5. Turn pressure control to maximum. Plug the power cord into outlet. Then switch on the pump. The green switch will light when unit is operating.
  6. Adjust pressure control. Pump provides maximum effectiveness when two fingers can slide between patient's buttocks and a deflated pad chamber. (Only for adjustable pressure type.)
  7. Caution: DO NOT USE in the presence of smoking materials or open flame. Air flowing through this pad will support combustion.

Cleaning and Storage of the APP Unit

The Alternating Pressure Pump Unit may be cleaned occasionally by dusting or wiping with a surface germicidal disinfectant solution. Do not immerse. Do not heat or steam autoclave.

Before Placing the APP Unit in Storage

  • Check the power cord and plug for abrasions or excessive wear.
  • Plug in the unit and check the air flow from the unit hose connection port. The air flow should alternate between ports every 2 1/2 minutes.
  • Check the air hoses for kinks or breaks. Replace if necessary.
  • If unit is operating properly, coil the hoses loosely and store with the unit in plastic sheeting to protect against moisture and dust.
  • Roll the mattress to store (do not fold).

Overdoor Traction and Exercise Pulley Units

It is extremely important that an exact amount of water prescribed by your family physician or therapist be put into the Overdoor Traction water bag to avoid injury.

Assembly Instructions

  1. The pulleys should be on the bottom of the "V-shaped" bar. Hold the "V-shaped" bar at a 90° angle and insert its end into the top clip of the door hook. Once in, turn the bar so that it is once again parallel to the door hook. Squeeze the two bars together and insert the bar into the bottom clip.
  2. Feed the string over the pulleys and attach one side to the halter bar and the other to the water-bag. In the case of the exercise unit, the strings will be attached to the handles.
  3. Pick up the head halter by the two metal "D" rings, holding both with one hand, to make the head halter hang as shown in the smaller illustration.
  4. Place the head through the middle with the chin resting in the chin cup and the straps hanging from the back of the head. Fasten the straps to the velcro on the chin piece. Once the head is in, each "D" ring will hook onto opposite sides of the halter bar.
  5. Adjustments for size may be made by moving the overhead strap up or down at the "D" rings.

Com-Tens Unit

If you have been diagnosed as having a type of pain discomfort that may be alleviated by the use of transcutaneous nerve stimulation, the Com-Tens may activate the release of endorphins, chemicals in the control system used by the body to suppress pain naturally. The Com-Tens generates electrical pulses that are sent through electrodes placed over the nerve centers. The various pulses employed by the Com-Tens can block pain signals normally sent to the brain through nerve fibers, thereby interrupting the brain's awareness of the pain.

It is, therefore, no longer necessary for many people to endure chronic or constant pain. The use of the Tens unit usually improves pain management significantly. The Com-Tens unit can reduce the need for pain narcotics and drugs. It is recommended that the Tens unit be used under the prescription of a family physician or therapist.

Positive Characteristics of the Com-Tens Unit

  • Safe
  • Non-Invasive
  • Drug Free
  • Non-Addictive
  • No Side Effects

Warnings

  • Tens electrodes must not be placed in such a position so as to pass electrical current into the caratid gland area.
  • Tens must not be prescribed to patients who are using a demand-type cardiac pacemaker.
  • Tens electrodes must not be placed so as to pass current transcerebrally (through the head).
  • Tens application must not be recommended before pain syndromes are diagnosed, and not before an appropriate etiology has been established.
  • The safety of Tens devices for use during pregnancy or delivery has not been established.
  • The effectiveness of Tens for pain of central origin, such as for headache, has not been established.
  • Tens devices should be used only under the continued supervision of a physician.
  • Tens devices have not been established as having curative values.
  • Tens is a symptomatic treatment, and as such suppresses the sensation of pain which would otherwise serve as a protective mechanism.
  • Tens devices should be kept out of the reach of children.
  • Electronic monitoring equipment, such as ECG monitors and ECG alarms, may not operate properly when Tens stimulation is in use.

Instructions for Com-Tens Use

  1. Peel the middle portion of the sticker and affix this to the outer side of the electrode (square rubber piece).
  2. Insert one end of the lead wire into the electrode. Never pull on the lead wire as it is very delicate and may break if stretched. Remove by pulling only the connector piece at the end.
  3. Add gel to the area of the skin with discomfort. Peel the remainder of paper off the sticker and place the electrode onto the skin. The sticky paper will secure the electrode to the skin. Note: If the slightest edge or corner of an electrode is not firmly applied to the skin, a tingling may occur at that spot and cause discomfort. Be sure that the entire electrode is firmly in place. Never remove an electrode while the unit is in the ON position. This may cause tingling discomforts.
  4. Insert the other end of the lead wire into the Com-Tens Channel Output receptacle.
  5. Insert the batteries into the Com-Tens unit.
  6. Set the timer control to "C". The unit will otherwise remain off.
  7. The amplitude increases in intensity as the "On-Off" switch on each Amplitude Control knob is set from 1 to 8. Each channel operates independently from the other. Turning on one channel gives a steady yellow Power Indicator Light. It also gives a blinking red Channel Output Indicator light next to the Channel Output Receptacle being used. A weak battery is indicated when the light becomes dim.
  8. Set the Pulse Frequency Control. This regulates the frequency of the pulses from 2 to 150 pulses per second (pps or Hz).
  9. Set the Pulse Width Control. This regulates the width (duration) of each pulse from 60 to 250 microseconds.
  10. Set the Mode Selector Switch to one of the three modes of stimulation:
M - Modulation Mode: This cycles every 4 seconds. The pulse and frequency remain adjustable.
B - Burst Mode: Every second there are two bursts of pulses. Each burst has 7 pulses, each pulse at the 100 Hz rate. The pulse width remains adjustable.
N - Normal Mode: This provides a steady stream of pulses. The pulse width and pulse frequency remains adjustable.
  11. Setting the Pulse Width and Pulse Frequency:
Conventional settings: Set the pulse width around 90 to 100 microseconds
Low-rate settings: Set the pulse width around 200 to 220 microseconds. Set the pulse frequency around 2 to 4 Hz.
Brief intensity settings: Set the pulse width around 200 to 250 microseconds.
  12. Set the Timer Control: The settings indicate 30 minute, 60 minute or continuous sessions. The unit will automatically stop cycling pulses after the 30 or 60 minute timed sessions, but will remain "on" indefinitely at the "C" setting. Each programmed stimulation must begin by setting the switch first to "C", then to the 30 or 60 minute settings. The unit will remain on with the yellow light glowing. The Channel Control knobs still need to be turned "off" to shut off the device at the end of a session.

Skin Irritation

Isolated cases of skin irritation may occur at the site of the electrode placement following long term application. The following are suggestions for reducing the chance of skin irritation, especially with frequent and prolonged use of the Com-Tens:

  • Closely clip or shave hair before applying an electrode. This will produce better contact and conductivity between the skin and the electrode.
  • Make sure both the electrode and the skin are clean.
  • Press the electrode onto the skin firmly to assure complete surface contact. Any separation between the electrode and the skin will produce a tingling that can be uncomfortable.
  • When removing the electrode, pull GENTLY on the electrode.
  • Do not apply an electrode over broken skin as this may produce discomfort.
  • Do not stretch the electrode.

Caring for the Com-Tens Unit

When not in use, store the Com-Tens unit in its protective case to protect it from possible external damage. Remove the battery before storing the unit. Keep all parts of the unit dry at all times. A damp cloth and mild soap can be used for wiping the unit on occasion. Do not use harsh cleansing agents on any part of the unit. Do not immerse.
