Tips for Safe Crutch Use:

  • The top of the crutches should be about 1" to 2" below the armpit when standing upright.
  • The hand grips of the crutches should be even with the user's hip and the elbows bent slightly.
  • The user's shoulders should lean forward slightly while using the crutches.
  • The top of the crutches should be held tightly against the user's sides allowing the hands to absorb the weight.
  • Resting the armpits on the top of the crutches can cause skin irritation.
  • Do not walk in cluttered areas or attempt to carry items in your hands while using the crutches.
  • Take short steps and rest frequently.
  • Always ensure you are properly fitted for a crutch that is appropriate for your needs by a licensed therapist or doctor.

Walking with Crutches

To walk, lean slightly forward and move both crutches comfortably in front. Shift weight to the crutches and sway good leg forward between the crutches resting it in front on the ground. Shift weight to your good leg and sway crutches forward again.

Standing Up with Crutches

Move to the front edge of the chair and hold both crutches in the hand on your injured side. Hold the arm of the chair with the free hand and put weight on the good leg, pushing yourself up with your arms to stand on the good leg.
